PP (Polypropylene - Polypropene)
The polypropylene (PP) is one of the most used materials in the world of plastics. Second only to Polyethylene, this thermoplastic semi-crystalline material has the distinctive trait of having different mechanical properties depending on its chemical tacticity. Giulio Natta received the Nobel prize for Chemistry for having studied the catalysts to produce polypropylene of varying tacticities. This material is characterised by a high tensile strength, high ductility, low density, and excellent thermal and abrasion resistance. Furthermore, it has a low cost compared to its high technical qualities.

Chemical and Physical Properties:
There are 3 types of Polypropylene: homopolymer, random copolymers and block copolymers. Polypropylene in all of its configurations offers an excellent resistance to moisture and a good chemical resistance to acids, alkali and solvents. PP, however, is not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene for example, or to chlorinated hydrocarbons, for example carbon tetrachloride.
Among the main chemical compositions there are differences of a thermal and mechanical nature. In fact, the homopolymer Polypropylene possesses a slightly higher density than the variant copolymer (respectively 0,905 and 0,897 g/cm3). Furthermore it proves to have a higher tensile modulus, hardness and maximum force.
Compared to PE, PP is not resistant to oxidization and high temperatures.
PP does not absorb moisture but is permeable to CO2. For this reason it is not used in beverages.
PP standard density: 0,85-0,9 g/cm3 (ISO 1183)
PP Melting point Tm: 165-175 °C
PP Glass Transition Temperature Tg: -20 °C
