ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)
ABS or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (obtained by the polymerization of the acrylonitrile-styrene group with butadiene), is a very common amorphous thermoplastic material. It is present in the continuous phase of acrylonitrile-styrene (SAN) and the dispersed phase of butadiene rubber. Every monomer affords different properties: l'acrylonitrile provides hardness and chemical and thermal resistance; styrene provides workability, brilliance and resistance; butadiene provides robustness and resilience.

Physical and Chemical Properties:
The grades and qualities available on the market permit the attainment of a wide range of characteristics, for example a medium and high resilience, brilliance of a restricted or elevated surface, distortion at high heat.
The value of the resilience can be easily varied according to the quality of the polybutadiene. It presents a good chemical resistance to hydrocloric acid, alkali and lubricating oils, and low resistance to sulphuric and nitric acid and aromatic hydrocarbons; these are flammable materials which release toxic gases during combustion.
Similar materials are SAN, ASA and ISB. Thanks to excellent mechanical properties, ease of processing and resistance to high temperatures, this material is claimed to be one of the most utilized in the automotive sector. ABS is a hygroscopic material as it requires a drying treatment before processing. Being a particularly amorphous material it does not possess a clearly distinct melting temperature.
ABS standard density:1,07 g/cm3 (ISO 1183)
ABS Melting point Tm: 200-280 °C; recommended 230 °C
ABS Glass Transition Temperature Tg: 105 °C
