PA6 (Polyamide 6, nylon 6, polycaprolactone)
Polyamide 6 derives from the caprolactone closed-loop monomer which has 6 carbon atoms and, during polymerization, the ring opens.
PA6 is robust, has excellent resistance to abrasion, good chemical and fatigue resistance, smoothness, resilience, solidity and high rigidity.

Chemical and physical properties:
The chemical and physical properties of nylon 6 are similar to those of PA66. The melting point, however, is lower than that of PA66, and the processing temperature range is wider.
Resilience and solvent resistance are better than PA66, but moisture absorption is greater.
Moisture absorption affects many properties and this feature must be taken into consideration when designing the components. To improve its mechanical properties it is possible to use different modifying agents; glass is one of the most commonly used fillers. The addition of elastomers, for example EPDM or SBR, improves their resilience. Since PA6 absorbs moisture quickly, it is necessary to verify its drying before molding.
History and trivia on nylon 6
The advent of the Second World War brought a substantial increase in the production and research of polymers. Nylon was invented by W.H. Carothers, at the time a young 30-year-old just graduated from Harvard, together with his research team at the DuPont company.
At that time, in fact, the US had to quickly solve the problem concerning imports of silk from China, blocked by Japan. Actually, in addition to its most well-known and common uses, silk was used during the war to produce parachutes.
On February 28 1935, the artificial fiber known as Polyamide was synthesized for the first time. A robust, tenacious, elastic fiber, durable when washed, repellant to mold, bacteria and insects, non-toxic and very resistant even at temperatures of over 200 degrees.
Legend has it that the name Nylon derives from "Now You Lose Old Nippon".
Without nylon today we would not have products like toothbrushes, velcro, Cordura, backpacks and tights. To date, Polyamide with its many variants (nylon 6.6, nylon 6, nylon 3, nylon 7, nylon 11, nylon 12) is one of the most important polymers and is mainly used in automotive and textile applications.
