3D printed polymers for more realistic prosthetics
There is a new platform of 3D printable soft polymer networks which boast an unmatched tunability of stiffness of three orders of magnitude and an intrinsic capability to interbond. A team at Texas A&M University tweaked the chemistry of a single polymer to develop these new materials, which are 3D printable, self-healing, and recyclable.
"This combination of features makes the new polymer family well-suited to a variety of applications, such as developing more realistic prosthetics and soft robotics that have more flexibility," says Svetlana Sukhishvili, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, to Elizabeth Montalbano's DesignNews.
In a new paper published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, scientists explain that "soft materials with widely tailorable mechanical properties throughout the material's volume can shape the future of soft robotics and wearable electronics, impacting consumer sectors."
Once again research has generated a new way of using polymers.
