Will plastic taxes favour PET over polymers?
Plastic taxes introduced by Italy and the UK are likely to drive plastics consumption in the packaging sector toward polyethylene terephthalate (PET) due to the mature existing market for non-virgin PET, maintains Joe Papineschi, director of Eunomia Research & Consulting.
As Tom Brown writes on the ICIS website, plastics packaging taxes are likely to encourage the use of PET over other polymers. The reason for this is the greater ease in sourcing secondary material.
There is another secondary effect of plastic taxes. Petrochemicals industry executives are sure that anti-plastics legislation will drive increased usage of materials with significantly higher carbon footprints, such as glass.
It's best to keep in mind that every action has its consequence.
