In 2016 the Colombian government identified a country-wide deficit of 30,000 schools. In addition to this, the country has been struggling to deal with the 12 million tons of waste it produces annually, of which only 17 percent is recycled. For this reason, Dow Chemical, the largest producer of plastic chemicals in the world, has decided to help build schools out of hard-to-recycle plastic waste. Plastics Technology, part of Gardner Business Media, claims that 70 percent of each plastic brick is made from hard-to-recycle plastic, such as flexible films, foam to-go containers, plastic cups, straws and lids.
