PLASTICS HAVE SAVED THE LIVES OF NUMEROUS ELEPHANTS
When John Wesley Hyatt patented the first industrial plastic in 1869, his intention was to create an alternative to the elephant tusk ivory used to make billiards balls. Over a century later, James Dumesic, the Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has developed in collaboration with his research team, an economical and high-yielding way to produce cost-competitive renewable plastics.
